One Community/One Book
“Mountains Beyond Mountains” was selected as the One Community/One Book assignment for the Health Science Center campus and focuses on Dr. Farmer’s public health work in Haiti and other areas of the world.

Model public health system in Haiti
While a medical student at Harvard, Dr. Farmer spent extensive periods of time setting up a model health care system in an area of poverty-stricken Haiti, developing successful treatment strategies for AIDS, tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The infectious disease specialist and anthropologist is the founding director of Partners in Health, an international health care advocacy organization that conducts research and provides health care services for those living in poverty.

The following podcast are Dr. Ruth Breggren's (UTHSCSA) recollections about going to medical school with Dr. Farmer and other personal observations about the man and his philosophies.
